Where is the pop-over we added on our Squarespace site?

We’ve all experienced pop-ups on a site (AKA “pop-over” or “interstitial window”).

They’re everywhere!

— Referring to forms that pop-up into view when either entering a site, leaving a site, scrolling on a site, reaching the bottom, or just appear after a certain amount of time.

Chances are, if you’ve added the code, and you’ve seen it working, then it’s still working for others, but how can you be sure?

— Access the site as another person!
There’s no need to hire a medium to do a seance— 🧙‍♂️we can do it with the powers of technology. 🤓

Here’s how you can test:

  1. The easiest way to test: your browser has PRIVATE/INCOGNITO browsing built right in.

    • In your browser’s top menu, go to FILE… and select “NEW INCOGNITO WINDOW” or “NEW PRIVATE WINDOW”.

    • This type of window is one without your identity, so it’s just like an unknown person. Typing your site’s domain into the incognito window’s Address Bar (AKA “URL BAR”) will allow you to test your site from the perspective of a new site visitor!

  2. Test the site on ANOTHER browser. If you have Chrome and Safari installed, or if you’re like me, you have, Chrome, Safari, Fireworks and Opera installed— all for the same reason— to experience a site from another perspective. (Web developers HAVE to do this)

  3. Test the site on a mobile device or a second computer. Turn off wifi on your mobile, and you’re literally entering your site from another location.

  4. Ask a friend/coworker to test on their computer.

  5. If all of these options aren’t available to you, you can also clear your cookies, and clear your cache and try again.

All of the above examples are possible because each different path is accessing new “cookies” on the site. The cookies on your pop-ups may have unique settings that will remember visitors for a certain amount of time. It can get pretty advanced, depending on your settings; for example, e-commerce sites can even use code to detect visitors from other countries, and maybe display limited shipping solutions for specific locations for them.

Good luck!
